Summer Class Descriptions
Clown with Christopher Bayes
Jump into your body....Open like a little flower....Rediscover your playful spirit and the simple
pleasure and ferocious generosity of performance. We will pursue the Clown together in all of
its messy and hilarious beauty. Your relationship to all other forms of drama will be enriched by the openness and reckless abandon that the Clown requires. And after the clowns are
discovered?...they can begin to make a mess in gleeful pandemonium, go on to find their
names, and explore triumph and tragedy!
Extra Super Advanced Clown with Christopher Bayes
Name? Check. Costume? Check. Put on the greatest trick in the world, make work with other
Clowns, and face that greatest of Clown challenges...the dreaded flop.
Commedia dell’arte with Christopher Bayes
Learn to bring the mask to life! Live fully in your body! Investigate the actor/creator! Take
ownership of your work! In this class, we continue to develop the transformational power of the actor. When the mask is alive - and we see the impulses begin to travel without filter through the physical psychology of the body and played with abandon - we begin to understand the actor/audience relationship in all of its ferocious beauty. The work is primarily improvisational with the actor/creator at the center of the theatrical conversation.
Body Breath Heart: Energy Practice for Actors with Annie Piper
Deep breath, warm body, open heart: this Qigong (energy work) and yin yoga hybrid will help
you map the energetic body, unpack holding patterns and down regulate the nervous system so you are ready to engage fully and fearlessly in your work. Expect to shake, sweat and feel
things.
Play with Justine Williams
What if acting were just play, and the key to your aliveness and full magnificence on stage was
primarily a process of rediscovering and developing your playful impulses with, for and. through an audience? Over the first two weeks of the summer, through solo and group games, exercises and exploits, we’ll reconnect with your unique pleasure in playing, and establish some principles of play to support you in approaching character and text, inhabiting a range of theatrical forms, and bringing your own performance worlds to life.
Improv with Ralf Jean-Pierre.
Fill your pants with giddiness and your heart with wonder! Eliminate that pesky, stinky pressure to be a genius, and instead find freedom in your magnificent dumbness! Unlock a playfulness and collaboration so honest, so personal, so beautifully stupid, that it inspires cascades of real, snorting, quivering, gut-busting, belly laughs! You will make people laugh ‘til they snort! And you will tell them, “I heard you snort!” Take Improv With Ralf!
Taksu Training Mask Work with Budi Miller
Training with masks, you will experience what it viscerally feels like to embody a character. This workshop encompasses fundamental approaches to actor’s movement, improvisation, physical awareness, ensemble training, and character embodiment. You will unlock a deep knowledge of the physical and emotional body and tap into parts of yourselves that haven't yet been explored, as well as releasing the parts of your artistry that have been restricted.
Free from judgment, guilt, shame or punishment, you will begin to open the gateways to the
energy of taksu. Taksu is a performance energy that the Balinese say - is the moment when the energy of the divine appears. The embryo of taksu lives in everyone, and it has different names in other cultures. It is the playground for what Chris Bayes recognizes as “the little one.”
Throughout Budi’s 20+ years of research and development of BMTT while incorporating the Balinese Performing Arts Training (BPAT), he has freed the imaginations of actors for theatre and on camera, around the world.
MAKE with Layna Fisher
Look at you being a maker, making your own thing you made!
In MAKE you will learn to devise material from an audacious, raucous, sparkly and poetic place. You will stretch out in your squirrelly body. Then you will participate in activities that will illuminate the funny-touching-unique you. And you will learn to attune to the material that appears when you do it the fun and funny way (and sometimes the sad but beautiful way)
Having fellows to create with gives you some ha-ha and sometimes not, feedback. We will work on solo and group work. You can come with a topic/writing you would like to explore or you can come with a breezy open mindedness between your ears and we will find things together. Tada!
